Introducing the Advanced Radiotherapy System and Its Modern Techniques
Radiotherapy is one of the main pillars in the treatment of many cancers. With advances in technology, more precise, safer, and more effective treatment methods have been developed. The radiotherapy system available at our center is one of the most advanced systems currently available and can deliver IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, SRS, CBCT and soon 4DCT. These techniques allow highly precise tumor targeting, reducing damage to surrounding healthy tissue and minimizing side effects.
1. Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Definition:
IMRT is an advanced radiotherapy technique in which radiation intensity is adjusted across different areas of the treatment field, allowing an accurate three-dimensional dose distribution according to the tumor shape and location.
Advantages:
Precise tumor coverage with minimal damage to healthy tissue
Suitable for irregular tumors or tumors near sensitive structures such as the spinal cord, brain, lungs and prostate
Significant reduction in long-term side effects
2. Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT)
Definition:
VMAT is an intensity-modulated radiotherapy technique in which the treatment machine rotates around the patient while changing the radiation angle, intensity and beam shape.
Advantages:
Shorter treatment time than IMRT
High accuracy in matching dose to tumor volume
Greater patient comfort due to shorter sessions
Applications:
Head and neck, prostate, lung, breast and pelvic cancers
3. Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT)
Definition:
SBRT is a highly precise technique for treating small, well-defined tumors in organs such as the lungs, liver, spine and pancreas. A high radiation dose is delivered in a limited number of sessions, usually 1 to 5.
Advantages:
Much faster treatment
High effectiveness in tumor destruction
Better preservation of target-organ function by reducing damage to healthy tissue
Requirements:
Highly accurate imaging systems
Advanced patient positioning and immobilization to prevent movement
4. Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)
Definition:
SRS is similar to SBRT but is used for brain lesions. A very high radiation dose is delivered to a specific brain area in one or several short sessions.
Applications:
Brain metastases
Benign tumors such as meningiomas and schwannomas
Vascular abnormalities such as AVM
Advantages:
Non-invasive alternative to brain surgery
Millimeter-level targeting accuracy
Rapid return to daily activities
5. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)
Definition:
CBCT is a three-dimensional imaging technique performed before each treatment session to determine the precise position of the tumor relative to the patient.
Advantages:
Improved patient-positioning accuracy
Real-time positioning corrections
Reduced unnecessary radiation exposure to healthy tissue
Applications:
IMRT, VMAT, SBRT and SRS require CBCT to achieve the highest possible treatment accuracy.
4DCT is an advanced technique that accounts for body movement such as breathing in addition to three-dimensional imaging. It is particularly important for moving tumors such as lung tumors.
Advantages:
Synchronizing treatment with the patient respiratory cycle
More precise targeting of tumors that move with breathing
Improved safety and effectiveness of radiotherapy
